Claridge Lecture in English Studies features Cambridge professor
The Illinois College English Department presents the annual Claridge Lecture in English Studies featuring Michael D. Hurley, university lecturer and fellow of St. Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, Cambridge U.K. on Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln Hall.

“Re-reading Poetry: What That Does to Poems, and to Us” will be the topic of Hurley’s presentation. His talk will be on the experience of reading poetry but will also focus on the work of British poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. In addition to Hurley’s lecture, he will visit English classes, and meet with students and faculty.

Hurley’s recent publications include a study of G.K. Chesterton’s thought and style, a new edition of “The Complete Father Brown Stories” and a co-authored work on “Poetic Form.” He currently has two large research projects in the pipeline: “A History of Poetics: from Classical Antiquity to the Present” and “Victorian Verse Styles.”

The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information contact Robert Koepp, professor of English, at 217-245-3441 or email at rkoepp@mail.ic.edu.
