Update: Congresswoman's presentation to be rescheduled
Due to inclement weather conditions the Phi Alpha lecture will be rescheduled.

Congresswoman U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.) will be giving the Phi Alpha lecture at Illinois College on Monday, February 17, in Rammelkamp Chapel at 11 a.m. The title of her presentation is “Working Together and The Need For
Bipartisanship In Washington."

The event is free and open to the public.

Bustos will join a distinguished list of speakers who have spoken at the annual Phi Alpha Lecture Series which began in 1997 with a presentation by the late U.S. Senator Paul Simon. Other speakers include former U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.) and longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas.

Oratory has been a large part of Phi Alpha Literary Society’s tradition since the group’s founding in 1845. Many noted speakers and public servants have spoken to the society including Abraham Lincoln who traveled to Jacksonville in 1859 to give the address, “Inventions and Discoveries.”

Bustos attended Illinois College before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Master’s Degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Springfield. An accomplished basketball and volleyball player, Bustos was inducted into the Illinois College Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Her parents Gene ’55 and Ann Hammond Callahan ’55, and son Nick Bustos ’10 are Illinois College graduates.
