Eze-Echesi earns MWC's Peterson Award

Illinois College's Ofuma Eze-Echesi has been named the 2012-2013 recipient of the Ruth Peterson Award. The award recognizes the Midwest Conference female student-athlete who posted the highest grade point average, while lettering in two league sports, during their junior year.

Eze-Echesi, a senior from Lagos, Nigeria, earned varsity letters in both indoor and outdoor track and field during the 2012-2013 academic year. Eze-Echesi is a double major in accounting and finance. She minors in both economics, and management and organizational leadership.

Eze-Echesi has been a standout for the Illinois College women's track and field team, earning all-conference honors 13 times during her collegiate career. She has won three Midwest Conference titles: the 2012 indoor 60-meter dash title, the 2013 outdoor 400-meter dash title, and the 2013 outdoor 4x100-meter relay title. Eze-Echesi holds both the Illinois College indoor and outdoor records in the 400-meter dash.

Active away from the track as well, Eze-Echesi has held the role of treasurer for both the Newman Club and the Coalition for Ethnic Awareness. She has also been active in the Accounting Club, Investment Club and Homecoming Committee.

Ruth Peterson is the former Commissioner of the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women, who went on to serve as the Co-Commissioner of the Midwest Conference. Peterson, a Beloit College alum and employee, passed away in October 2006.
