Jasper Brown to Teach For America after graduation
Illinois College senior Jasper Brown of Canton, Ill., will be teaching social studies through the Teach For America program at a Chicago area middle school next year.

“I read about Teach For America, and I decided that this could be a fantastic opportunity to intricately connect my undergraduate training in education with education policy,” Brown said.

Teach For America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach For America recruits and develops a diverse corps of individuals of all academic disciplines to commit two years to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the movement to end educational inequity.

“I chose Teach For America due to its mission of bettering the education system for all students of all backgrounds,” Brown said. “I believe that all students deserve an opportunity to learn in a supportive, collaborative and effective classroom.”

Once Brown graduates from Illinois College this May, he will begin an intensive five- to six-week training session during the summer through Teach for America. “I will be learning strategies to become an effective teacher, discussing issues in education, meeting other Teach For America Corps members and teaching summer school for the Chicago Public Schools.”

Brown will then be hired to teach at a Chicago middle school starting in August or September.
