Washington Monthly ranks Illinois College a top 25 national liberal arts college
Illinois College ranks 25th overall in the Best Liberal Arts Colleges category of the 2013 Washington Monthly College Rankings.

Washington Monthly evaluates each school’s contribution in three categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarships and Ph.D.s), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). Illinois College ranked high in the service category placing first in service, staff, courses and financial aid support, and fifth in community service.

Illinois College moved up 63 spots from last year’s rankings. President Barbara Farley credits the dramatic rise in rankings to the dedication and hard work of the college’s students, faculty and staff. “I am proud to see Illinois College recognized by such a well-regarded national publication as Washington Monthly. Our high ranking among liberal arts colleges recognizes Illinois College’s commitment to service, access to college, high quality educational experiences and student success.”

In determining rankings, Washington Monthly breaks colleges and universities into five types: liberal arts colleges, national universities, master’s universities, baccalaureate colleges and community colleges.

Washington Monthly magazine editors stated that, “We design the Washington Monthly college rankings to embody the American higher education compact at the institutional level. Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend.”
