Illinois College grad wins Tony for Broadway revival of “Pippin”

Illinois College graduate and Quincy native Ryan Tanner joined the elite group of Tony Award Winners on Sunday night. Tanner of Square 1 Theatrics, co-producer of Broadway’s “Pippin,” won the coveted Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical at the 67th Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

“Pippin” took home four Tony’s, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Diane Paulus, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for Andrea Martin and Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Musical for Patina Miller.

The Tony Award is considered the highest U.S. theatre honor.

Tanner and Square 1 also won the Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award for their involvement in restaging Stephen Schwarz’ 1972, five-time Tony Award-winning musical. After a short run at Harvard’s American Repertory Theater, “Pippin” opened earlier this year at The Music Box Theatre in New York City on April 25.

This is the first Broadway production for Square 1, as well as the first nomination and first win. Square 1 Theatrics, formed by Tanner and Jay Krottinger in 2011, recently co-produced the off-Broadway sensation, “Flipside: The Patti Page Story,” in conjunction with Oklahoma-native writer and director Greg White. “Flipside” debuted at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2010 before embarking on an eight-city tour of Oklahoma. In December 2012 the production led a successful limited engagement in New York City at 59E59. The “Flipside” international tour is slated for 2014.

Tanner graduated from Quincy Senior High School and was an active member in the music department under the direction of Kathy Dooley and Dan Sherman. His great-grandfather, Walter Tanner, owned Tanner Music Company in Quincy and was the first organist to play for the silent movies at the iconic Fox Theatre in St. Louis.

Tanner graduated from Illinois College in 2002 and moved to Tulsa in 2004. He is actively involved in the community, serving on several nonprofit boards, helping raise funds for the Mental Health Association in Tulsa and Tulsa CARES. In addition to producing theatrical performances, Tanner and Krottinger manage IQ Surgical, a healthcare marketing firm based in Tulsa, Okla.
