The family bluegrass band, “The Harmans,” will headline this year’s Osage Orange Festival at Illinois College. The annual event is planned for Friday, May 10, 6 to 8:30 p.m. and has been moved back outdoors to a new location on the Illinois College Walkway.
Sponsored by the Illinois College Alumni Association, the Osage Orange Festival is a time-honored tradition on the Hilltop. The event began with a picnic in 1882 when students and faculty took a break from their studies to trim the Osage hedge that surrounded campus. The picnic has grown into a festival in recent years to accommodate musical entertainment and activities for all ages.
A barbecue buffet featuring pulled pork, chicken, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, watermelon and sweet tea will be available for $11 (adults), $6 (children 5-12) and free (children 4 and younger). Beer and wine will also be available for purchase. The Osage orange meal will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to the Illinois College family and the surrounding community.
Free, supervised inflatable games will be offered for the kids in Memorial Gymnasium while southern Illinois bluegrass band “The Harmans” will entertain outdoors.
