Is summer orientation required for all students?
Yes, all entering first-year and transfer students are required to attend one of the four IC Connections Summer Orientations. Each orientation lasts two days and students are required to attend all of the sessions during those two days. During orientation, students will be made aware of resources on campus, have a chance to ask questions they might have about Illinois College and become better acquainted with the Illinois College community.
Do I have to stay on campus overnight for orientation?
Yes, all first-year and transfer students are required to stay on campus overnight. Students will be staying in Lincoln Hall.
What do I need to bring to orientation?
All students will stay on campus overnight in Lincoln Hall and will share a room with another new student. Students should bring any overnight essentials (toiletries, medications, alarm clock, etc.) We will provide linens (one bath towel, hand towel, washcloth, blanket, pillow, pillowcase and two flat sheets), but you are welcome to bring additional linens from home if you’d like. You should bring comfortable clothing and shoes along with a jacket or sweater.
Another important thing for students to bring to orientation is unofficial copies of all high school and college transcripts along with any test scores (Advanced Placement, ACT, SAT, etc.). We will still need official transcripts mailed directly to the College, but if they have not arrived in time, the unofficial copies will be invaluable to have when you meet with your faculty orientation leader to schedule your courses.
What if I am a transfer student?
IC Connections has designed an orientation session specifically for transfer students. All new transfer students are required to attend the session on June 5 and 6.
What happens at orientation?
During your IC Connections summer orientation session you will have the opportunity to:
- Work with an academic advisor one-on-one to build a class schedule.
- Receive individual attention in small group sessions.
- Receive information on a variety of student services and resources.
- Register for classes.
- Learn about campus life and explore ways to get involved.
- Socialize with other new students and make new friends.
- Be introduced to academic policies and support services.
- Return to campus in the fall registered, well-organized and connected!
Can I bring a family member to summer orientation?
Family members are welcome to attend. IC Connections has created two very specialized programs, one for students and one for family members. However, because program space is limited, we do not recommend that younger family members or friends attend.
Additionally, there are a limited number of rooms available for family members if they wish to stay overnight on campus. These rooms are free of charge and are found in Greene Hall, a separate hall than that of the students.
How many family members or guest can attend summer orientation?
Students are asked to limit their summer orientation guests to two, but exceptions can be made if needed.
Will I be with my parents/family member(s) during orientation?
While there are times throughout the first day of orientation for students to get together with their family, there are times when the programs are specific to either the families or the students and we do keep them separate. It works best when students and families follow their respective schedules.
Does it cost anything to attend orientation?
No, it does not cost anything to attend orientation. However, you may wish to bring money if you plan to purchase apparel, the summer common reading text or any other item(s) from the Illinois College Bookstore.

Does it matter what day I attend summer orientation, and will I have a better chance of getting the classes I want if I attend one of the first orientation dates?
No. Class scheduling is not influenced by which orientation date you attend. We divide course availability by the total number of program days and make an equal number of seats in each class available for each orientation day.
Do I have to read a book over the summer?
Yes! Reading the "common reading" is the only way you will be able to complete the required assignment for your first-year seminar. The writing assignment will help you to crystallize your thinking about a significant issue and then express your ideas in a succinct form to other members of the academic community. It is your first class assignment at Illinois College and you’ll want to start your college career off strong!
This year's 2014 first-year seminar assignment will be due on Saturday, August 30. If you are a first-year student who would like more information on the required assignment, please contact us at email@example.com
