IC to host the Illinois State Academy of Science annual meeting
Illinois College will host the 105th annual meeting of the Illinois State Academy of Science on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6. More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students and faculty from throughout Illinois and the region are expected to attend the conference which will feature displays, discussions on science research and a keynote address from astronomer Pamela Gay.

Throughout the two-day program there will be more than 150 poster and oral presentations. This includes 15 Illinois College students that will present their research including projects funded by internal grants such as the C. Reed Parker Faculty Development Grant and Margaret A. Cargill Foundation. There are also 20 different institutions throughout the region taking part in the ISAS annual meeting.

“This is the premier opportunity for undergraduates to present their research in the state and region,” Laura Corey, assistant professor of biology, said. “It also gives our students a great chance to experience a broad scientific community.”

The keynote address will feature an astronomer who is a writer and podcaster focused on using new media to engage people in science and technology. Gay is an assistant research professor at The Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Teaching by day, she works on astronomy data by night, teaming up with amateur astronomers and citizen scientists to work to better understand our universe. She received her bachelor degree in astrophysics from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Texas. The keynote address will be on April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Cummings Dining Hall.
