Current Sonya Project Programs

In 2013, the Sonya Project expanded to assist new immigrant populations in Jacksonville, allowing Illinois College students to use their foreign language skills as they help newcomers learn English.

For the Spring 2015 semester, Illinois College student volunteers will serve in five local schools, Lincoln Elementary, North Elementary, Washington Elementary, Turner Jr. High, and Jacksonville High School. Students served range from Kindergarten to ninth grade.

Participating Illinois College students are members of

  • ED 203: "Multicultural Issues in Education"
  • French 301: "French Conversation through Film"
  • IS 205: "Leadership in a Democracy"
  • Former  Sonya Project Volunteers
