The Illinois College Leadership Program welcomes Ta-Nehisi Coates, senior editor of The Atlantic, to campus as the 2013 Al Habtoor Leadership Lecturer. Coates will be speaking about “Emancipation, Race and Radicalism” on Monday, February 18, at 11 a.m. in Rammelkamp Chapel.
Identified by TIME Magazine as one of the world’s best bloggers, Coates has worked for numerous highly renowned organizations such as The Village Voice, Washington City Paper and Time. Coates also contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Monthly and O, The Oprah Magazine.
His recent controversial article in The Atlantic, “Fear of a Black President,” provoked both anger and praise. However, he is best known for his nuanced reading of and writing about the racial tensions inherent in American history and ideology including the Emancipation Proclamation.
The Al Habtoor Leadership Lecture is free and open to the public.
