Susan Napier, professor of Japanese language and literature at Tufts University, will be discussing "From the Wasteland to the Tsunami: Miyzaki Hayao's New Paradigm of Apocalypse" as part of the Japanese Studies Lecture Series on Monday, November 5, in Kirby Learning Center, Room 6 at 11 a.m.

Napier has published numerous books and articles on anime and contemporary Japanese fiction. In particular, she is a leading scholar of anime and manga. In her recent book titled From Impressionism to Anime: Japan as Fantasy and Fan Cult in the Western Imagination, Napier discusses the impact of Japanese culture over the last 150 years with a particular focus on anime fandom.

The Japanese Studies Lecture Series will take place throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. The series is meant to enhance the understanding of the Japanese culture and inspire not only the college community, but also generate interest in Japan within the local community as well.

The lecture series is free and open to the public.
