Illinois College welcomes WIU professor to speak on diversity

Western Illinois University Professor of Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies, J.Q. Adams, will be at Illinois College asking the question, “What’s So Scary About Diversity?” on Monday, October 29, at 11 a.m. in Rammelkamp Chapel.

In this presentation Adams will discuss how group and individual racial/ethnic identity has impacted every aspect of our lives from citizenship to economic opportunity. He will explore how the current demographic changes are shaping public discourse about immigration, our borders and our schools. He will also discuss the enduring influence of racial/ethnic hegemony in the United States.

Adams specializes in multicultural education and has helped to develop many multicultural programs at Western Illinois University. He earned his bachelor's degree in social studies and psychology from Grand Valley State College, his master's degree in alternative education and psychology from Indiana University and his doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This presentation is free and open to the public. For any questions about the event contact the Office of Academic Affairs at 217.245.3010.
