Paul Findley collection showcased in Schewe Library

A portion of the Paul Findley collection will be on display in Schewe Library on the campus of Illinois College from now until Monday, November 12. The exhibit is called “The Campaigns of a Lifetime: Paul Findley, 1936-1982.”

After losing his first election in 1952, Findley, a 1943 Illinois College graduate, said that running for office “carries with it a feeling of personal satisfaction that is difficult to describe.” From sophomore class president to the U.S. House of Representatives, he ran for office 15 times with 13 victories to show for it. The Findley exhibit explores some of his campaigns.

In addition to memorabilia from many of Findley’s Congressional campaigns, the exhibit highlights the 75th anniversary of Findley’s term as sophomore class president at Jacksonville High School, the 60th anniversary of his failed primary race for the Illinois State Senate and his first successful campaign for the House of Representatives in 1960. The campaigns are illustrated with original historical materials – artifacts, documents, photographs – many of which have never before been on display. Most of the objects in this exhibition are drawn from the Paul Findley Archives at Illinois College. Here are just a few of the many items that will be on display:

  • Autographed picture of Vice President Richard Nixon
  • Findley’s first Congressional identification card Bumper stickers and campaign buttons from 1952 to 1982
  • 1937 Jacksonville High School yearbook
  • Souvenirs from the Findley Trail Rides
“Paul Findley once challenged his newspaper readers that ‘Campaigning can be a great, rewarding experience. Try it sometime!’ This exhibit brings the experience a little closer,” Claire Jerry, Findley curator, said. “You do not have to be a candidate yourself to come and see the traces of a lifetime of campaigning.”

The exhibit can be viewed on the main level of Schewe Library on the Illinois College campus. The library is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 midnight, Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 12 midnight.
