Illinois College announces homecoming activities
Illinois College will celebrate homecoming October 8 through 14 with its traditional parade, athletic contests and reunions. The theme, “Red, White and True Blue Forever,” will be interwoven throughout the alumni activities and give the community an opportunity to honor the military.

The annual college pep rally will kick off homecoming week on Monday, October 8, at 8 p.m. when the homecoming court will be announced. Spirited women’s powder puff football games will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, and conclude with consolation and championship games the next evening. All powder puff games will be played on the Green Athletic Field.
 
The music group “Timeflies” will be performing a 2012 Homecoming Special Event Concert on Tuesday, October 9, at 9 p.m. in Bruner Fitness and Recreation center. Tickets are $5 for Illinois College students and $20 for the general public, 16 and older. Tickets are available online (additional fees may apply) or at the door prior to the concert. The Illinois College Alumni Association Board of Directors will host a wine and cheese reception on Friday, October 12, in the Alumni House, 1201 Mound Avenue, from 6 to 8 p.m. Follies, a student talent competition, will be held the same evening beginning at 8 p.m. in Rammelkamp Chapel.

Illinois College is pleased to announce its Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2012 inductees. A total of 10 individuals and one team will be enshrined at the Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, October 12, on Rammelkamp Concourse just inside the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center. The Class of 2012 is highlighted by the induction of the 1993 volleyball team. Team members were Jennifer Beck Wollstadt ’94, Heather Kirby Peters ’94, Kathy Sipich Reuter ’94, Donna White May ’94, Erica Caruso Helmich ’95, Denise King Mixdorf ’95, Becca Thorne Lindstrom ’95, Kary Cram Dowling ’96, Rosemarie Langley Piper ’97, Raya Petefish Bogard ’97, Shelby Simmering Kinney ’97, Erica Slavin Kindermann ’97, Jennifer Stevens Baptist ’97, Joana Ramsey ’98, Amy Lemmon Romanowski, Kirsten Timmerman and Heather Winters Moore. The team was coached by Brenna Kelly, Roxana Butler and Matt Grimm ’95.The other inductees include Charles “Bud” Colin ’33, Buford Green ’64, O.C. Hughes ’88, Brian Rhoades ’96, Jon Murray ’92, Martha Vest Blakeley ’99, Alicia Brown Vest ’99, Willie Thompson ’05, Carey Cappel ’07 and Jim Murphy.

A 5K Run/4K Family Walk will begin Saturday, October 13, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on the Ware Family Track. On-site registration will begin at the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center at 7:45 a.m. The cost to participate in the race is $15 for adults. A Kids Fun Run/Walk will follow the earlier race. Children eight and under will run or walk one lap around the track while children nine and older will go two laps. Federal Judge Richard Mills ’51, the 2012 Illinois College Homecoming Parade Marshal, will lead the annual parade starting at the intersection of the Illinois College Walkway and Park Street at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13. Featuring approximately 115 college and community entries, the parade will head north on Park Street, turn right on College Avenue heading east, turn left on Main Street, funnel around the downtown square counterclockwise and disband on State Street near the Morgan County Courthouse.

Before being appointed a federal judge in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan, Mills had a military career spanning over 33 years in which he received a Bronze Star while serving in the 3rd Infantry in the Korean War. Graduating from Illinois College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951, Mills went on to receive a law degree from Mercer University and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Virginia.

The Illinois College Alumni Association invites alumni, parents, students and friends of the college to a buffet luncheon under the Homecoming Celebration Tent on the corner of Park Street and Edgehill Road in the Abraham Lincoln Hall parking lot from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages five to 12 and is free of charge for children four and younger. At the conclusion of the buffet, concessions will continue under the tent throughout the afternoon until 7 p.m.

The Illinois College baseball team invites alumni and friends to join them in honoring former Blueboy Bryant “B.J.” Luxmore, a 2010 graduate, at a tree-planting ceremony beyond center field of the baseball field near the Ware Family Track at 12 p.m. Luxmore was killed in Afghanistan on June 10, 2012.

Homecoming athletic contests begin at 1 p.m. when the Blueboys compete in football against Beloit College on Green Athletic Field at England Stadium. Halftime activities will include the presentation of the 2012 homecoming king and queen and their court, as well as awards for hall decorations, class games and parade floats.

The post-game celebration will feature the popular Chicago band, “Spoken Four,” which will begin after the football game at approximately 4 p.m. and continue until 7 p.m. under the Homecoming Celebration Tent.

Hearty hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and musical entertainment by “The Rob Killam Trio” will be provided for this year’s class reunions – 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007 – on the first floor of Lincoln Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Cost is $15 per person. Homecoming weekend will conclude on Sunday, October 14, with an interdenominational worship service in Rammelkamp Chapel at 10 a.m. Illinois College Chaplain Katrina Jenkins will lead the service that will feature special music by the alumni choir.
