Speaker to discuss dangers and lasting effect of social media
Janet Judge, president of Sports Law Associates LLC in Cumberland Center, Maine, will give her presentation, “Social Media and the College Student,” on Sunday, September 30, at 8 p.m. in Sherman Gymnasium inside Illinois College’s Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center. Convocation credit is available for Illinois College students, and the public is invited to attend this free event.

A graduate of Harvard University and a former member of the Harvard women’s soccer team, Judge will focus her remarks on the ways in which college students, and student-athletes in particular, are affected by social media sites. She will specifically emphasize the dangerous practice of posting offensive or illegal material, including content related to hazing, on social media sites.

Judge will also highlight the long-lasting nature of social media posts, as well as the increased practice of employers using social media as a filter when hiring new employees.

In addition to studying at Harvard, Judge also attended Boston University School of Law. She went on to become the assistant director of athletics at Harvard University. In 2011 the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators named her Administrator of the Year for Athletic Organizations.

Judge’s appearance has been made possible by the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs Grant Program.
