StoryCorps kicks off the Illinois College convocation year
In the first IC Connections Convocation of the new Illinois College school year StoryCorps will present “Collective Sharing: Building Community Through the Act of Listening” on Monday, September 3, at 11 a.m. in Rammelkamp Chapel.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of our lives. In this presentation, StoryCorps will offer a complete overview of their mission, history, initiatives and services of the program and how it connects and strengthens communities. They will also explain how to preserve and share more stories with accessible, do-it-yourself interview methods.

Created in 2003 by Dave Isay, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 40,000 interviews from nearly 80,000 participants. In his book, Listening is an Act of Love, which is the IC Connections summer reading text for 2012, Isay has selected some of the most remarkable stories from this vast collection and arranged them into a moving portrait of American life.

Through these stories, StoryCorps wants people to be reminded of their shared humanity, strengthen and build the connections between people, teach the value of listening and weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that every life matters. At the same time, StoryCorps is creating an archive of American voices for future generations.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
