Chicago-based writers/artists James Tadd Adcox and Meghan Lamb will read their creative work. Adcox is the author of the collection, The Map of the System of Human Knowledge and founder and former editor or Artifice Magazine. Lamb, who also does work in sound and performance art, is the author of the novel Silk Flowers and editor of the online literary journal Red Lightbulbs.

Glenna Schroeder-Lein, Manuscripts Librarian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, will talk about the stories behind the exhibit To Kill and To Heal: Weapons and Medicine of the Civil War. The traveling exhibit, which is based on a current exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, will be on display in the Parker Science Building throughout March 2013.

A decorated U.S. Army Iraq war veteran and out gay man, Rob Smith's fight against the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy draws from past personal struggles with coming out, suicidal thoughts, and battling homophobia both on the battlefield and as an out gay undergraduate. His lecture "Winning the War Against Homophobia" is a compelling narrative designed to give a voice to issues facing LGBT youth today while facilitating discussions about coming out, homophobia, and creating safe spaces for openly gay students on college campuses.

The top 6 speakers compete for the recognition as the best public speaker within their cohort. The topics may range from advocating for bullying prevention and same-sex adoption to advocating against poaching and the recruiting of child soldiers.

Tiffaney will also be sharing some of her personal journey through recovery from her own eating disorder and the stories of others that have had eating disorders and body image issues.

Like the rest of the world, Japan is threatened by the prospect of rising sea levels, drops in agricultural production, and increasingly erratic weather. In the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami and the meltdown of nuclear reactors in Fukushima, Japan is struggling to produce more renewable energy to replace nuclear power and carbon-based fuels.
Dr. Mark Tilton holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley. He has lived in Japan for the total of five years. His research is in the field of comparative political economy, with a specialization in Japan. He has worked on antitrust and regulatory policy and is currently researching climate change policy. His teaching is also in the area of comparative and East Asian politics. | |

From Latin tunes and swing, to rock and funk, there is sure to be something for everyone. The Illinois College Jazz Band will be joined by several special guests including the Clarinet Choir, the Saxophone Quartet and the Chamber Singers.

But their happiness splinters under the strain of different needs and judgments rooted in the divide between the hearing and deaf worlds. Can they truly understand and support one another, bridge the gap between them? As they learn to see themselves and their partners more clearly, they yearn for a place to love and live together between sound and silence.

Multiple Location on Campus 1:00 p.m. Convocation in Rammelkamp Chapel The 3rd Annual Celebration of Excellence will take place this Friday, April 26th. I invite you to attend the presentations and poster sessions being given by your classmates. I also encourage all of you to attend the Convocation at 1:00 during which Dr. Elizabeth Tobin, Dean of the College, will offer remarks and three major awards for service and academic excellence will be awarded to Illinois College students. The Harry Joy Dunbaugh Distinguished Professor Award, the highest honor an Illinois College faculty member can achieve, will also be presented at this time.
Convocation credit is available for attending the 1:00 Opening Convocation AND for attending the Student Presentations and Poster Sessions. I’ve attached a sheet to this message that details the procedure for earning convocation credit.
