Illinois College alumnus killed in Afghanistan

Illinois College mourns the loss of 2010 graduate Cpl. Bryant “B.J.” Luxmore. The New Windsor native was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday, June 10.

The Department of Defense said the 25-year-old died from injuries he suffered from small enemy arms fire in Panjwai, Afghanistan. He had been in the military for 14 months and was on his first deployment. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

Illinois College Head Baseball Coach Jay Eckhouse remembered his former player as a young man always striving to be better on and off the field.

“I truly am deeply saddened,” Eckhouse said. “B.J. was a great kid who always did things the right way, no short cuts – very competitive and very hard-nosed.”

After graduating from Sherrard High School in 2005, Luxmore went on to attend and play baseball at Monmouth College for two years. Luxmore then transferred to Illinois College where he continued playing baseball.

Luxmore will be accorded full military honors and also was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge.

In October 2011 Luxmore married Jamie Lower of Aledo. He is survived by his son, Lane, his parents, Leonard and Brenda Luxmore, and his brother, Brock.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Bryant J. Luxmore Memorial Fund. Information on the fund and funeral arrangements are posted online at www.dennisonfuneralhome.com.
