Speaker to discuss small town Illinois between 1870 and 1920
John Hallwas will be on campus to talk about “Small-Town Heritage: Life in Illinois Communities, 1870-1920” on Monday, April 30, at 11 a.m. in Kirby Learning Center, Room 6.

Hallwas will discuss small towns in Illinois from the post-Civil War period through World War I when most of the state’s more than 1,000 small communities flourished. Incorporating dozens of slides into his presentation, Hallwas discusses prairie, woodland and river environments, along with townscapes and transportation, business activities and social life during the 50-year period when small Illinois towns were thriving economic centers.

Hallwas holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida and recently retired from Western Illinois University. He has received a number of teaching and service awards and has written more than a dozen books, along with many articles on Illinois history and literature. He is also the president of the Macomb area Learning is Forever (LIFE) adult-education program.

The program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Illinois General Assembly. The presentation is free and open to the public.
