The Monticello College Foundation has awarded a $24,500 grant to provide scholarships for seven women to attend Illinois College during the 2012-2013 academic year. The scholarships are known as the Monticello College Foundation Scholarships in memory of Myrtie T. Dixson.
Monticello College was a women’s college located in Godfrey from 1838 to 1970 and had a strong historical relationship with Illinois College. The Rev. Theron Baldwin, one of Illinois College’s founders, was the first principal of the Monticello Female Seminary, as Monticello College was known in its early years.
The Monticello College Foundation was founded in 1970, when the college sold its campus to Lewis and Clark Community College. The Foundation has funded scholarships for 112 Illinois College students since its inception.
