Circulation Desk

The Circulation Desk is to your right as you enter the Library.  This is where you may:

  • Check you circulating materials, I-Share books, and interlibrary loans;
  • Check out equipment, including laptops, chromebooks, projectors and screens, cameras, camcorders, speakers, tripods, and headphones;
  • Check out reserve materials (which may not be taken from the Library).

Unbound periodicals and most reserve materials may not be taken from the library, but still must be charged out from the desk.

To check out any item, you will need your student or Faculty I.D.  The Library cannot check anything out to you without your I.D.

All circulating books may be borrowed for a period of up to four weeks for students and sixteen weeks for faculty and staff with 3 renewals. We bill for replacement costs after items are forty five days overdue.

Checkout Periods, Fines & Fees

Circulating books may be borrowed for a period of 4 weeks for our students, and 16 weeks for our faculty.  Each item may be renewed 3 times.  Students and faculty may borrow I-Share items for 4 weeks, with two renewals.

DVDs and VHS tapes may be borrowed for 2 weeks, with no renewals. We bill for replacement costs after items are 45 days overdue.

Equipment has shorter loan periods ranging from 3 days to 2 weeks, depending on the type of equipment. There are no renewals for equipment. The fine for overdue equipment is $15.00 per day. We bill for replacement costs after 2 weeks if the item has not been returned.

To pay late fees or replacement costs, please bring payment in the form of cash or check to the Library. Checks should be made out to Illinois College. If mailing payment, please send to:

Reserve Materials

Materials may be placed on reserve to give a number of users access to a limited number of items. Most reserve materials may not be taken from the building and their use in the library is restricted to a period of two hours at a time. Two hours before closing, some reserves may be checked out overnight, but must be returned no later than one hour after the library opens the following day. Fines are twenty five cents per hour overdue.

Circulating Books

Schewe Library currently owns over 143,000 books and bound periodicals.  All circulating books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The 000s through the 300s are housed on the lower level. The 400s and above are located on the upper level.

Reference Collection

The Reference Collection houses a variety of non-circulating materials, such as subject encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and handbooks.  The Reference Librarian's desk is opposite the Circulation Desk, and the Reference Collection is located on the shelves in that immediate area.  All reference books are marked with an "R" in front of the call number.

Newspapers & Periodicals

Schewe Library currently receives 250+ different print periodical titles and 25,000+ online full-text periodicals. When a print periodical arrives, it is first placed on the browsing shelves in the Current Periodicals & VHS section of the Library.  Non-current periodical issues are shelved on the Library's first floor (lower level).

Schewe Library maintains a microform collection of The Jacksonville Journal Courier (Jacksonville's local paper) in a cabinet on the lower level. The College Rambler (the College's student newspaper) is also kept in a microform collection on the lower level.  The New York Times is available through the Historical New York Times database, which allows searching the full-text of The New York Times back to 1851. Back issues of other newspapers are kept in orange hanging files, opposite the elevator, in the lower level. Newspapers and periodicals do not circulate.

Children's Books

Children's books are arranged in fiction (by author) and non-fiction (by Dewey Decimal Classification), and are housed on the Library's lower level.  Recent efforts to collect award-winning titles have boosted our collection.

Just to the right of the Library entrance, there is a color photocopier. Copies can be made of microfilm by using a microfilm reader/printer, which is located on the Library's lower floor.

Reciprocal Borrowing & Interlibrary Loan

If Schewe Library doesn't have an item you need, our catalog can also search the collections of 86 Illinois libraries in the I-Share network, as well as the wider network of libraries cooperating in interlibrary loan (including the Jacksonville Public Library).
