Theatre Faculty

Craig Steenerson, MFA (Assistant Professor of Theatre) is the Designer and Technical Director for the Illinois College Theatre Department. Craig grew up in Southern California where he received his Liberal Studies degree from California State University, San Bernardino and went on to earn an MFA in Theatre Technology (with an emphasis in scenic design) from Utah State University.
For the past 25 years, Craig has worked on more than 200 productions in many capacities from actor, carpenter, technical director, production manager, scenic designer, sound and lighting designer, theatre consultant.


Craig has worked professionally with the Ellen Eccles Theatre and Utah Festival Opera, Redlands Theatre Festival, Lyric Repertory Company, Knotts Berry Farm and the Miss California World Pageant. Craig has worked on large-scale opera productions and prepared venues for incoming professional Broadway touring shows like Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls and Crystal Gayle. He toured to Hawaii with Quilters and Pumpboys and Dinettes with the Redland Theatre Fesitval and Thailand with the Glenn Miller show America Sings as part of Utah State. He went on to teach at Arizona State University where he designed lights for Ramona (for which he received a Zoni nomination), and sets for Black Woman’s Blues and Good N’ Plenty directed by guest director Jack Reuler of Mixed Blood Theatre Co. of Minneapolis.
Craig has given seminars at the SETC and KCACTF conferences with regards to streamlining production processes while avoiding pitfalls and burnout.
He spent the summer of 2006 working in the Tri State area of New York with TriArts mounting productions of Aint’ Misbehavin’, Chicago, and Will Rogers Follies, and returned in 2007 as a sound engineer for High School Musical! Craig came to IC in the fall of 2008. In the summer of 2009, he created a new black box space out of the old camera studio left behind from the Communications Department. Craig was hired in the summer of 2010 as the lighting designer for the McLeod Summer Playhouse on the campus of SIU-Carbondale for The Drowsy Chaperone and Spelling Bee.
For IC TheatreWorks, he has designed several shows, but has enjoyed Playing for Time, Secret Garden, Anon(ymous), and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Craig teaches Stagecrafts, Stage Management and Design courses. He serves on the Educational Policies Review Committee and the Incident Review and Fine Arts Board Committees and is an advisor to the student advocate group SAGE (straight and gays for equality). He enjoys working with his students and colleagues.
