Professor to Serve as Keynote Speaker at Mayor's Unity Breakfast

Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard announced today the Mayor’s Unity Breakfast, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011, at Hamilton’s Fireside Room, 110 North East Street, Jacksonville.

The MLK Breakfast will feature keynote speaker Richard B. Maye, Ph.D., assistant professor and chairman of the sociology department at Illinois College. Maye is Founder of the Second Timothy Baptist Church in Springfield, and his passion is teaching all who would listen and understand sociological perspectives as well as God’s Word. Maye has always been genuinely concerned about each and every person he meets. He is acutely aware of public awareness on social issues of hunger, homelessness, nutrition and affordable housing. Sarah Strack Briggs wrote a newspaper article on Maye in which she quotes the following, “Dr. Maye has been and will continue to be a favorite among students who have taken his courses. His pure love of the job, unparalleled with, and genuinely kind manner has allowed Dr. Maye to earn a special place in the hearts of those around him.”

Maye holds a doctorate in theology from the International Theological Seminary in Van Nuys, Calif. and a master’s degree in political science and public administration from the University of Illinois Springfield. Maye is the author of four books: Walk with Me: From the Pasture to the Manor House, Agnes: Wife of the Devil?, The African American Church: A Sociological History and I Fly.

Ticket costs are $7 per person and are available at the door. Doors open at 7 a.m., and the public is encouraged and invited to attend.
