Japanese Floor was established in the Fall of 2009 by the students’ request. This year, students with either a Japanese major or minor have an opportunity to live in a house. Seven Illinois College students and one Ritsumeikan exchange student currently live at the Japanese House. It creates an environment that encourages students to study Japanese language and culture outside of the classroom. The Japanese House members offer one activity per week in order to spread Japanese culture through the rest of the campus and the community. The students lead presentations, cultural activities, discussion panels, and visit elementary schools to teach local children Japanese culture and language. The house members often enjoy watching Japanese films and cooking Japanese food at the house. They have an opportunity to take a field trip to participate in Japanese cultural events. They also volunteer to help a group of Ritsumeikan University students who come to Illinois College for four weeks during the Spring semester to learn English.
