True service.

In Professor Kelly Dagan’s annual “Social Stratification” sociology course, students practice a service-learning model that builds connections between local community agencies and classroom instruction. During the fall 2009 semester, 15 students devoted at least five hours per week to their work with five local organizations: the Jacksonville Area Community Food Center, the Prairie Council on Aging, the Jacksonville Area Center for Independent Living, the local Habitat for Humanity and the Boys and Girls Club. They got a taste for the daily administrative functions of local organizations and also spearheaded special projects like a satisfaction survey for past recipients of Habitat for Humanity homes and the first-ever Senior Day event in Jacksonville.
