Associate Professor of English Beth Widmaier Capo is an author, mentor and voracious reader — and now, a distinguished Fulbright Scholar. The popular professor is spending the 2009-10 academic year in Japan at Doshisha University in Kyoto and Osaka University in Osaka. Capo has high expectations for herself and her students. “True excellence,” she says, “is always striving to learn more; it is challenging yourself, and others, to be a positive force in the world; it is taking each day as an opportunity and an adventure.”
In her faculty role at Illinois College, Capo leads courses in American Literature, Gender and Women’s Studies, American Studies and writing, as well as overseeing senior research topics. In addition to special first-year seminar topics, she has taught a course on Illinois authors and an interdisciplinary study of women and the American experience.
