Visiting students spend two weeks living with families in Jacksonville and two weeks with students in the residence halls. “Many Illinois College students repeatedly offer to host Ritsumeikan students, and say that it is one of the most meaningful experiences of their college years,” says program director Rebecca Spencer.
Faculty also coordinate coursework for Illinois College classes that relates to the Intercultural Exchange courses so that students can engage in combined classroom discussions and projects. Each exchange student is paired with a revision partner to assist them with English writing assignments and pronunciation practice.
The annual Matsuri festival, planned entirely by Ritsumeikan students and showcasing special Japanese foods, clothing and games, is a popular campus event each spring.
