First-Year Seminar/Learning Community


The First-Year Seminar at Illinois College introduces students to the values of a liberal arts education, strategies for success, and common themes and skills students will build on throughout the IC BLUEprint General Education Program. Courses are focused on varying themes from a broad range of disciplines, and they offer incoming students an opportunity to enter into a small learning community with a team of student and professional mentors. 

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Students will acquire strategies for academic success in college by
    1. learning the standards of college-level work;
    2. becoming confident in using college resources essential to success;
    3. understanding more about who they are and developing a plan for achieving their goals;
    4. becoming proficient in modes of active learning, including research, collaboration, and creative and critical thinking.
  • Students will become engaged members of the Illinois College community by
    1. participating in common learning experiences;
    2. discovering the unique value of a liberal arts education;
    3. learning about and discussing the values of the Illinois College community;
    4. forming relationships with an advisor, a student affairs professional, a student leader, and a small group of peers.
  • Students will be exposed to the major goals and themes of the BLUEprint General Education Program by
    1. exploring the connections among various fields of knowledge, particularly by participating in a learning community with a speech or writing course;
    2. developing a greater understanding of diversity in the United States and the world, seeing themselves as members of a global community.
  • Students will become better communicators in both written and oral forms by
    1. participating in writing and speaking extensive embedded experiences.
